The short list of items no junk removal company can legally haul in Texas — and exactly where to take each one around Royse City, Rockwall, and Hunt County.
Why some items get refused
It is almost never about the item being difficult. It is that the facility at the other end will not accept it in a mixed load, and a hauler who slips it in anyway is putting their disposal access and their insurance at risk.
Household hazardous waste, refrigerants, and scrap tires are all handled under separate systems in Texas, with their own collection points and their own paperwork. A general junk trailer is not one of those systems. The good news is that every item on the refusal list has a defined place to go, and most of them are close by.
If we say no, we will tell you where it does go. That is the whole point of this page.
The items we cannot haul
This is the entire list. Everything not on it is fair game:
- Liquid paint, stain, solvents, thinner, and other wet finishes.
- Motor oil, gasoline, diesel, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids.
- Pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and cleaning chemicals in bulk.
- Propane tanks, and any other pressurized cylinder.
- Tires — with or without rims.
- Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners that have not had the refrigerant recovered.
- Asbestos-containing material, medical waste, and biohazards.
- Ammunition, explosives, and flares.
- Large volumes of concrete, dirt, or roofing shingles — not banned, but they need approval first so we bring the right setup.
Paint, chemicals, and automotive fluids
These are household hazardous waste, and both counties we work in have a collection point for them. Rockwall County residents have a collection program run through HHW Solutions. Hunt County is served by the Greenville–Hunt County Household Hazardous Waste Center.
Check current hours and eligibility before you load the car — these facilities generally serve residents of their own city or county and some operate on limited days rather than continuously.
One thing you can do yourself: latex paint is only hazardous while it is wet. Left open in a ventilated spot, or mixed with cat litter or a hardener until it is solid throughout, it stops being a liquid and can usually go out with regular household trash. Oil-based paint does not work this way and always goes to the collection point.
Dried-out latex paint is ordinary trash. Wet paint of any kind is not.
Tires
Texas regulates scrap tires under their own program through the TCEQ, and they are tracked from the point they are dropped off. That is why tire shops charge a small disposal fee per tire and why a general hauler cannot simply add four of them to a mixed trailer.
The easiest route is the shop replacing them — disposal is usually built into the price of the new tires. Failing that, many tire retailers will accept a small number of loose tires for a per-tire fee, and county collection events sometimes take them.
If tires are the only thing standing between you and a finished cleanout, tell us. We can often arrange them separately rather than leave you with a stack in the garage.
Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners
This is the one that catches people out, because the appliance looks like ordinary junk. Under EPA Section 608, refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician before an appliance containing it is disposed of or scrapped. It is a federal requirement, not a local preference, and it applies to the unit whether or not it still runs.
Once the refrigerant has been recovered and the unit is tagged to prove it, the appliance itself is just a metal box and goes with any other scrap. Some municipal services will pick up a tagged unit; some appliance retailers will haul the old one when they deliver a replacement.
We can take a refrigerator or freezer as part of a job — it just carries a separate handling cost and needs to be mentioned when you send photos, so it is priced correctly rather than discovered on the day.
Mention the fridge when you send photos. It changes the quote, and finding it at the curb is worse for both of us.
Asbestos, medical waste, and ammunition
These three are hard stops with no workaround at our end. Suspected asbestos — common in pre-1980s popcorn ceilings, floor tile, and pipe insulation — requires licensed abatement, and disturbing it to load it is the exact thing you are not supposed to do. If you suspect it, stop and call an abatement contractor rather than a hauler.
Sharps and medical waste go through pharmacy or clinic take-back programs. Ammunition, flares, and anything explosive should go to your local law enforcement non-emergency line, which will tell you the right drop-off procedure.
What we absolutely can take
The refusal list is short. The everyday list is long:
- Furniture of every kind — couches, sectionals, mattresses, bed frames, dressers, desks, tables, chairs.
- Appliances — washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters.
- Electronics, including televisions and old CRT sets.
- Boxes, bagged household trash, clothing, toys, and general clutter.
- Remodel debris — cabinets, doors, trim, drywall, flooring, non-hazardous lumber.
- Yard waste, brush piles, storm debris, and fence sections.
- Hot tubs, pianos, gun safes, exercise equipment, and other heavy awkward items.
- Whole garages, sheds, attics, storage units, and rental turnovers.
